I am an Economist with 7+ years experience in statistical analysis, and econometrics. I have extensive experience in applying advanced causal identification statistical methods and in the use of R, Python, STATA, and Excel.
I have recently defended my Ph.D. thesis in Economics at the University of Luxembourg. During the Ph.D. program, I have investigated the determinants of international migration and the integration of migrant children. Before moving to Luxembourg, I obtained a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Hertie School in Berlin, and Bachelor and Master’s degrees in Economics from Universidad de los Andes, in Colombia.
Projects
The solution to the immigrant paradox
Beine, M., Montes -Vinas, A., Zanaj., S.“The solution to the immigrant paradox: aspirations and expectations of children of migrants”. DEM Discussion Paper 26/2020 https://orbilu.uni.lu/handle/10993/45431
The role of financial aid on foreign education: evidence from Colombian graduates
Using data from LinkeIn, I track international students who applied to a grant program offered to Colombians who are interested in studying abroad. I find the grant increases the probability of sucessful completion of the studies abroad by 30 porcentage points. A working paper is available in this link:
Network Effect and Cultural Distance: Testing the Collier Hypothesis
Evaluate whether the effect of migrant diasporas on migration flows is stronger between culturally distant countries using new measures of ancestral distances. A working paper is available in this link:

- Analyzed large databases, and apply advanced statistical methods such as regression discontinuity design, longitudinal data analyses, Poisson regression for count data, data visualizations, among others using R. Collected data from diverse sources such social media using Python web scrapping tools and selenium.
- Extracted relevant insights from the data to answer research questions. Lecturer of the course Probability and Statistics and graduate teaching assistant for the lectures on International Economics
